Smartphone Camera Adapter
Capturing your first lunar photos to share.
A clamp that holds your phone over a telescope or binocular eyepiece, lining the camera up so you can take a quick photo of what you are looking at. The Moon photos people share online almost always come from a setup like this.
This is a simple, no-nonsense phone clamp that lets you mount your smartphone over the eyepiece of your telescope or binoculars to capture what you are looking at. Think of it as a mechanical jig that holds your phone in the right place so your camera lens lines up with the eyepiece - once you get it centred, you can take photos or even shoot video.
The Basic model suits beginners well because it is forgiving and easy to use. Your phone sits in an adjustable clamp, you loosen or tighten knobs to position it, and once it is aligned over the eyepiece, you are ready to go. Works with most modern phones (usually even with a case on), and fits eyepieces between 29mm and 45mm in diameter - which covers the vast majority of entry-level and mid-range telescopes. The whole thing is compact and takes up little space in your bag.
Expect the Moon and bright planets to yield the best results. The Moon in particular will give you lovely, sharp detail thanks to its brightness and contrast. If you try to photograph faint nebulae or distant galaxies with a smartphone this way, you will be disappointed - there is simply not enough light or sensor capability for that, no matter how good your adapter is.
First-time setup does require a little patience. Getting your phone centred precisely over the eyepiece in dim conditions takes a minute or two. Make sure you have decent eyepieces that clamp securely (avoid loose or wobbly eyepieces), and check that your phone will actually fit in the clamp before you set up - some very large phones or bulky cases may not fit. Once you have done this a couple of times, it becomes second nature.
- Brilliant for photographing the Moon and bright planets
- Forgiving on alignment, easy to use
- Works with most phones and most eyepieces
- Will not magic faint nebulae out of nothing
- A bit fiddly the first time you set it up
